Game 5 – Sunday, April 14, 2013

Best weather of the week so far!  We could take our coats off and soak up the sun.  Box score said it was 42 degrees, but with the sun, it felt like mid to upper 60’s.  And there was extra innings – Free Baseball as Trish calls it!!

We started out the day at Bernie’s (shocking!) to watch the 1st two periods of the Hawks game.  Trish & JO stopped in to say hello.  JO was heading to MI, so Trish was responsible for letting the cars out of the garage today.  Stay sober Trish!  We went into the park at 1:15.  Good crowd but we still had no problems finding 4 seats together.  And Wigs and I got chocolate handed to us on the way in - milk chocolate, a butter biscuit and a marzipan.  That's a good sign, right?

As for the game itself, here is what Joey Nowak of MLB.com had to say about today’s game:
“By the end, a balk was really all that remained.
The Cubs had been hurt from the mound in just about every conceivable way -- wild pitches, walks, a passed ball and a home run -- up until that point in the 10th inning before the last blow proved to be the most devastating.”

Ouch.  Supposedly, Camp’s spike got caught on the balk.  OK – the only non-rainy day in about 8 weeks??  On the good side of things, the Cubs did get off to a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the first.  On the bad side of things, there were 5 wild pitches in the 6th inning.  A Major League record!  Well.  The Cubs did re-take the lead in the bottom of the 8th, but the Giants tied it up in the 9th on a Hunter Pence homer.  Boo.  The Giants then scored 3 runs in the 10th, and the Cubs couldn’t overcome.

Kev & I stuck it out til the end of the game.  If the sun wasn’t shining, I don't know if I would've stayed for all 10 innings.

The Cubs were in all four of these Giants games, and they kept coming back in this one.  Their bullpen is bad.  The sun makes all the difference in the world though, and it was a really enjoyable day.  Except for the guy behind me who kept burping really loudly.

Recap:
Cubs lost 10-7.
Weather was sunny and pleasant.
Trish & John sold parking for $30 per spot – Opening Day prices!!
My season record:  Visitors 3, Cubs 2
